I find that I really enjoy Gothic mystery novels (i.e. The Thirteenth Tale, The End of Temperance Dare, Jane Eyre) and this one fits the bill, taking place in an old castle in Ireland!  There were references to Irish and British lore that I was unfamiliar with that I found myself pausing mid-novel to Google (such as St. Kevin and Lord Lucan).

The spookiness of this Gothic story was enhanced by my reading it in the midst of a power outage, by candlelight at the same time that the candles went out in the castle and paintings started moving on their own!!!

I did have a couple questions at the end (one possibly being a misprint) and I've emailed the author for clarity, but otherwise I did enjoy this read.  It was engaging, the characters intriguing and Andersen did keep you guessing about the final "who done it?"

Quotes:  "She might have all the pride in the world, but old age could not be entirely controlled by even the strongest will."

"And that is why, for centuries, women have learned how to make men think that a particular course of action was their own idea."

Rahkee is ten years old , living with her parents in Minnesota. One summer her mother, a native of India, begins receiving letters from her hometown and she takes Rahkee to meet her Grandmother , Aunts and cousins.    There she begins many adventures with her cousins, but in doing so Rahkee discovers a secret that her mother ran away from many years ago.

This was a nice story, a little reminiscent of "The Secret Garden"
